The BFG would allow you to fire out an all-encompassing giant green blob that would reduce everything on-screen that wasn't your hand into a gory mess. The technical limitations of the game also caused players to find out some tricky techniques to maximise its destructive potential; say you know there are enemies around the next corner but they're going to be a pain to kill, simply fire the BFG in their general direction, then run around the corner as the blast takes place, and it'll essentially "trap" the enemies in the blast. Literally, this is a weapon that will in most cases reduce everything on screen to a gross sludge.
