10 Most Bizarre Video Game Mechanics (That Actually Worked)

3. Possession - Driver: San Francisco

We understand spooky games that feature possession and we understand racing games, it’s just not often the two collide. Or ever. Except for in the case of Driver San Francisco. The idea of a racing game that lets you zip into the bodies of other drivers is, quite frankly, horrifying, but the result is outstanding.

You play a police detective in a coma, so much like many of the games on this list, the weird mechanic sits in with the narrative in a super satisfying way.

Essentially, you can shift into the bodies of other drivers and subsequently take control of that vehicle. This lets you bump out of your car while it's still driving to stop an escaping suspect in their tracks by crashing their car, or decide whether or not to side with the fuzz if you see someone trying to drive away from the cops. It’s up to you to possess the escapee and get away or possess the cops and bust them. Couple this odd mechanic with spot on driving mechanics and you’ve got a slam dunk. Or whatever the driving equivalent of that phrase would be.
