10 Most Breathtaking ‘First Time’ Video Game Moments
8. Scoring A 1-On-1 In ISS Pro Evolution
By the late nineties, pixels had mostly been replaced by polygons, but it wasn't until ISS Pro Evolution on the PS1 that a game actually managed to capture the flow of football, in which a general understanding of the beautiful game could actually come in handy when playing. Sure, scoring a 30-yard free kick or volley that crashes in off the underside of the bar was always satisfying, but to a football fan, nothing summed up ISS Pro Evo's ingenuity like feeding a through-ball for you striker to latch on to, then taking your time and side-footing the ball gently past the keeper as he closes you down. Why is this so special? Because it just felt so incredibly like real football; no weird scripted shots into one of several 'zones' in the goal, no default power-shot into the roof of the net, just a striker doing his job with cool, clinical precision. The realisation that you had this level of control over the ball was stunning. It was the moment that football had truly arrived in video games, and it turfed the pitch for the footy games of today.
