10 Most Brutally Difficult Opening Levels In Video Games

1. Skynet - The Terminator

Life can't have been easy in the distant future of The Terminator. The ground was littered with mounds of human skulls, giant caterpillar-tracked robots patrolled the land for humans to pulverise and - if this Genesis take on the mythos is to be believed - murderous minigun-wielding clones of Arnie from Commando were everywhere.

You need to face all the above in the first level of Terminator for the Genesis, as you control Kyle Reese in his attempt to get to the time-travelling wotsit in the Skynet base. While Kyle can absorb a healthy amount of bullets and laser beams, so can his mechanised enemies, who attack you in endless numbers as lose yourself in Skynet's identikit corridors.

The level concludes with the ol' countdown timer trick, as seemingly the whole world turns red and you must find your way out of the Skynet maze before it all blows up, or the time-travel doohickey portal closes, or something...

Which opening levels in games left you in despair? Are there any you just said 'screw this' and never bothered to complete? Let us know in the comments!
