The high-octane, hard-rocking series from Capcom has a well-earned reputation as one of the deeper, more challenging combo-based action franchises, but it's not too hard to empathise with those who found the third game a bit much.

Even in the intro, where Dante is beset by a hit-squad of demons in his club, you're forced to string together combos that you'll only know about if you played the previous games. In addition, the skill level of the enemies is on par with what you'd be fighting a good way way into DMC 1 or 2.

The street brawl outside Dante's club against a horde of scythe-wielding goons will soften you up for the Hell Vanguard boss - a shrill, shrieking Grim Reaper type with hard, fast attacks and a penchant for teleporting. The cackling fool is definitely one of the tougher first bosses you'll encounter in video games.
