GTA may hold the official record for igniting the most controversy, but Mortal Kombat caused bloody murder in its day and the uproar it sparked was a driving force behind the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board.

The fighting series, which debuted in 1992, gave parents nightmares with its blood-soaked battles and grisly, over-the-top fatalities. And to be fair, it earned its MA-13 rating with Subzero's trademark decapitations alone.

Gory finishing moves became a tradition for Mortal Kombat over the years and they only got more graphic as gaming hardware grew more sophisticated, with the most recent instalments scoring a hard 18 certificate in the UK.

Needless to say, these games are not for kids and never have been, but that hasn't stopped countires including Korea, Malaysia, Germany and Brazil from banning them.
