Chances are the last time you cried over a stack of hulking meat was if you dropped a hangover-slaying kebab after a night out, but Gears of War actually managed to make you get completely invested in the plights of Delta squad across all three campaigns. Spending hours and hours in the company of Marcus Fenix and co. made their quips and humour incredibly endearing, although it wasn't until the idea of one of them not making through to the end credits that it all sank in just how much you cared. In a reprisal of the original trailer for Gears, Gary Joules' Mad World plays out as one Dominic Santiago elects to drive his tanker into a gas station, the sole purpose being to blow both himself and the encroaching alien horde to kingdom come - if only for long enough that everyone else can escape. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEq0oV21tHI It's a moment that plenty people telegraphed a little ways off thanks to Dom's overall character being down in the doldrums after discovering his wife was beyond saving in part two, but as his suicidal save-attempt kicked in, the lump in your throat caught plenty people by surprise at just how affecting this whole scene really was.
