3. Agro - Shadow Of The Colossus
Animal companions aren't something done very much in video games outside of fully animated tales or the likes of Far Cry 4 where you can straight-up weaponise a tiger inside Shangri-La, but Shadow of the Colossus' approach to game design gave way to huge expanses of land where you'd get to simply gallop around to your heart's content. Maybe it's some natural, primal instinct to feel some sort of affinity with another creature, but like having a pet in real life you'll become immensely attached to the little guys without them doing a whole lot other than just being there when you need them. Well, extrapolate that idea into you fighting 50-foot creatures or going off for a bit exploring around the world with your favourite companion, and every time you whistle for Agro only for him to appear and provide your ticket to freedom is a feeling worth cherishing. Of course as the increasingly table-turning nature of the game reveals that you're something of the bad guy slaughtering these innocent Colossi from around the world, many of us just knew something was going to happen to poor Agro. Then it does - the two of you just make it over a particular gorge near the close of the game, only for Agro to throw you forward as he plummets to the depths below... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SclbRYmGG9A#t=85 Luckily this faithful companion does (barely) make it out alive at the very end of the game, but that doesn't nullify the instant "HOLY SH**!" feeling you'll have as you leap out your seat when it first happens.
