10 Most Disgusting Enemies In Video Game History
5. Granfalloon - Castlevania SOTN
One of the longest running video game franchises to use horror-inspired imagery, Castlevania has a reputation for being hard rather than scary. After all, pixelated floating heads and skeletons with never-ending ribs to throw at you aren’t particularly frightening… more white-knuckle annoying if anything.
Whilst the franchise’s iconic jump to the PlayStation is recognised more for how it transformed the gameplay, Symphony of the Night does have plenty of interesting sprite work and visual design. Enemies are much more viscous and threatening looking. One boss in particular though stuns most players upon coming across it because of just how bizarre it is.
Granfalloon, also known appropriately as Legion, at first looks like a giant brain. But players will soon realise that it is a perfect sphere of compacted human bodies when groups of ghouls fall from the shape, screaming as they disconnect from the orgy of horror, and then march towards Alucard. The unrelenting stream of zombies makes this battle feel incredibly claustrophobic and uncomfortable.
Battling Dracula and the Grim Reaper are positively cartoony next to this Junji Ito-esque Lovecraftian nightmare. Little more than a weak nucleus at the centre, the player most carve through Granfalloon’s outer shell of the damned in order to dispatch this iconic and sinister monster.
