10 Most Disturbing Video Game Commercials

4. PlayStation 3 - The Demonic Baby Doll

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqkNPcUMffU Those bald sexless baby dolls have always disturbed me. It's something about the eyes €“ completely lifeless, yet so detailed and lifelike - that breaks the fourth wall between human and toy. On top of that, tip the doll to a vertical position and its eyes open (or worse still, kind of half-open if it's broken), giving it an uncanny aura of sentience that no toy should have. Sony, who are well known for their surreal commercials since the PS2 days, play on the baby doll from hell trope brilliantly. It's just a doll facing a PS3 in a white space, opening its eyes and making a series of noises that range from gurgling, to manic laughter, to what I'm quite convinced is a death rattle. Disturbing though the ad is, it's masterfully made, leaving an imprint on your soul through its subtle horror. Sony took a similarly surreal approach with most of its PS3 advertising €“ the pinnacle surely being an Austrian ad featuring a man whose penis was replaced by a thumb. Why a thumb-penis would tap into the Austrian psyche I'm not sure, but it's kind of fitting for a country that gave us Freud and psychoanalysis.
