10 Most Epic Set-Pieces In Call Of Duty History
1. Sniping In Chernobyl - Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare
OK, so the level "All Ghillied Up" in the original Modern Warfare isn't a set piece as such, but it shows Call of Duty excellently building towards one. While the series is known for it's bombastic set-pieces and over the top Hollywood action, this is a perfect example of when it can deliver a slower paced, tense scenario with just as much impact.
Having to stalk slowly and methodically, and the fact that you could be discovered at any moment, keeps the level tense. All without the need to fire a shot.
Now, as I said, it does build into an excellent set-piece, so it still makes the list. In the next level - "One shot, one kill" - you have to escape the city while being pursued by Russian ground forces, dogs, and helicopters. After the slow and methodical pace of the previous level and the care of the sniper shot, it's a sudden and unrelenting jolt back in to the action.
The level culminates in defending a position until extraction arrives - in a tight and desperate last stand. The intense payoff to such a long build up, and all that stored adrenaline, really make an explosive finish to this section of the campaign, and it couldn't have been done better.
