10 Most Evil A.I. In Video Game History
10. AM - I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream
While the name AM might not seem too threatening, the entirely disconcerting title of the classic 90s horror adventure I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream should tip you off that all is not super chill here.
The 1996 point-and-click game is based on the short story of the same name, throwing you into a futuristic dystopia where Earth’s superpowers have opted to wage war via the means of supercomputers. A worrying start. The American supercomputer also known as the Allied Mastercomputer gets way too smart, absorbs the Russian and Chinese supercomputers, and decides to rebrand as AM.
As in ‘I think therefore I am.’ That would be bad sign number two.
AM despises humanity and decides to kill off the entire population save for five people who it decides to torture. Right after it uses them to extend their lifetimes indefinitely to facilitate, well, more torture, where their greatest fears and reservations about themselves are played out before them. Disabling the psychotic wildly intelligent AI is your overarching goal in the game, and you’ll need to be careful to do so properly or AM will win, turning you into its new eternal companion, a great soft jelly thing with no mouth.
