After spending ten minutes or so at the start of the game establishing Joel's family life and his relationship with his daughter, Naughty Dog's masterpiece breaks the serenity of the scene by throwing them into the opening act of a disorientating zombie apocalypse.

As the two battle through the chaos happening outside though, it becomes clear that the zombies themselves aren't the most dangerous threats out there.
