10 Most Heartbreaking Video Game Moments Of The Decade (So Far)
5. The Baby's Surreal Death Scene In What Remains Of Edith Finch
The entirety of What Remains of Edith Finch is focused on the titular character replaying the death scenes of her entire family tree. So that means by the time you get to Gregory's room, who was only an infant when he died, you know how the next few minutes are going to play out.
But even with the knowledge that something horrible has to happen to the baby, nothing can prepare you for what comes next.
Taking control of the one year old in a bathtub while he plays with his toys, the scene is jarringly serene, even when the tub starts to fill up to an alarming height. The next thing you know Gregory is under the water, but the surreal jovial nature of the sequence continues as if nothing is wrong, even though you know in real life the baby is actually dying.
It's a strange scene - and some would even say that it goes too far - but damn if it isn't the most tragic part of the whole game.
