3. SOMA's Twist Ending
For the entirety of SOMA players are tasked with trying to find a way to get themselves off a dying Earth.
The idea is that humanity as we know it on the planet is dead, but if the player could transfer the consciousness of the remaining people into a computer that could be shot into space, it would allow the species to live on in one form or another potentially forever.
What's never outright explained though is that this transfer is more like a copy, with a duplicate of the consciousness being uploaded rather than the original. This means that effectively two different versions of the same person are being made, one that's going to be 'saved' and uploaded and one that's doomed to be stuck on the dying planet forever.
All this information is revealed in the final few minutes where the character you've been playing as begins the countdown to launch the ark, frantically attempting to upload his own mind to the machine before it's too late.
At the last moment though he's told that there was never a chance that he'd leave the facility, but that another version of himself will be saved to live out the rest of his life out among the stars.
