10 Most Hilarious Instances Of Video Game Censorship
4. Celes' Leap Of Faith - Final Fantasy VI
On the side of the morbidly hilarious, we have Celes from Final Fantasy VI and her "leap of faith," which in the original Japanese version was actually a suicide attempt. For obvious reasons, the Western translators didn't want to keep the original context of the scene in the game; however, the alternative dialogue they came up with is the most ridiculous solution they could've come up with.
In the original version, Celes visits a cliffside after seeing her "grandfather" die. She finally lost every person she cared about, and overwhelmed by her grief, she convinces herself to jump. But in the English translation of the game, the explicit talk of suicide is replaced with Celes talking about how she doesn't feel well and how she heard tales of people jumping off cliffs to "perk themselves up." Inspired by the idea, she decides to take a leap of faith and hope for the best.
So, instead of a failed suicide attempt, you get a girl who gleefully leaps off a cliff in order to cheer herself up.
Ah, yes. Nothing helps with the loss of your loved ones like a little bit of amateur bungee jumping without a rope.
