10 Most Iconic Opening Sequences In Video Game History

7. Fallout 3

Fallout 3
Bethesda

Fallout 3 begins literally with your birth, to which you're then greeted by the always welcome vocal talents of Liam Neeson. He plays your father, and for the first hour or so, you get to experience significant moments of your life as you grow up in Vault 101. Eventually your father disappears, causing an uprising and forcing you to leave the Vault and go out into a world youve never known.

What makes this whole opening stretch of the game so good is that it gets you invested into the story and the world of Fallout, while at the same time teaching you how the game is played. It's all done very organically; merging tutorial with environmental storytelling in a way that really leaves an impression. Culminating in the opening of the Vault, you are blinded by the intense light, before your eyes adjust and the size of the world dawns on you.

Its also expertly paced, just the right length without feeling rushed - an issue that the recent sequel couldnt manage to avoid. These strengths have made this opening an instant classic, and despite its slow burn, is actually one of the most memorable parts of Fallout 3.
