10 Most Iconic Swords In Gaming History

9. Masamune

I almost gave this entry to Squall’s Gunblade from Final Fantasy VIII because despite the name it is a melee weapon that comes packed with a 225% accuracy rate on top of stellar stats making it an absolute beast, but I decide to sidestep to the Masamune.

Most often appearing as a katana, a word I can say out loud, Masamune is a sword that crops up in a lot of video games but most significantly in Chrono Trigger and no less than eighteen Final Fantasy games. In the seminal JRPG, Chrono Trigger, Masamune pulls a Soul Reaver in that it’s deeply rooted in the game’s story. Just to make things confusing, the Masamune that Frog wields is actually a broadsword.

For the uninitiated, Frog is one of the game’s central characters and yes he is a frog but his real name is Glenn and boy if you don’t know Chrono Trigger you’re going to think I made all of that up.

Based on the sacred real world weapon forged by its legendary namesake, the broken Masamune must be assembled using an extraordinarily rare resource called Dreamstone to restore its original power at which point Frog can wield it at its intended strength. The sword has an attack stat of 75 and has a substantial chance to land a critical hit when used in conjunction with the Hero’s Badge. In Final Fantasy, Sephiroth’s formidable Masamune has incredible reach and is a weapon befitting its infamous owner. In most Final Fantasy games that let you obtain it, its only drawback is that due to its strength you usually only obtain it very late in the game.

In Chrono Chross, the Masamune is cursed, driving its wielder into a frenzy, though it can be transformed into the game’s most powerful weapon, the Mastermune. Fun to say and fun to slay. Things. With.
