If you made a list of your favourite competitive multiplayer games, Nintendo would probably pop up a lot; the company knows how to make engaging, timeless multiplayer experiences. Super Mario Kart came out twenty-two years ago, yet the series continues to develop and grow; with Mario Kart 8, it's arguably never been better. One of the key reasons for this consistency is the competitive aspect. Mario Kart is fun against AI opponents but it ramps up a level when you add your friends into the mix. Weapons become all important when trying to best your buddies and one in particular has become renowned for causing mayhem. The Red Shell might seem quite simple but looks can be deceiving; it's a weapon capable of ruining friendships for good. The Red Shell is picked up in item boxes and, when thrown, it will lock onto the person in front of you and crash into them, disrupting their race and, hopefully, letting you fly past them, gleefully laughing. Of course, then you'll be hit by one in retaliation and you'll clench your fists in frustration, muttering foul words under your breath. That's what makes the Red Shell so brilliant; in the blink of an eye, it can make or ruin your race. Other weapons might require more skill to use but none will ever match the joy of nailing somebody with a Red Shell and stealing 1st Place at the last second.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
