Ever since the release of Grand Theft Auto III all the way back in 2001, Rockstar have proven themselves to be the undisputed champions when it comes to creating immersive open worlds. Since then, the developers have continued to hone and perfect their craft, pushing the limits of what an open world game can be until they arrived at Grand Theft Auto V, a game that continues to stand the test of time almost a decade later.

Los Santos is the perfect sandbox for players to be set loose in. On top of being a technically impressive showcase, Los Santos gives players everything they need to cause as much carnage as they desire within an expansive and varied world. Whether that includes going on full-blown rampages in bustling streets, racing across the open countryside, or simply taking in the scenery from the air, GTA V allows players to spend their time however they like.

No matter how crazy things get, however, the mind-blowing level of detail Rockstar packed into this game keeps everything firmly grounded in reality. Everything players can do and interact with works like they'd expect and seamlessly blends with the grander story.

And this isn't even mentioning GTA Online.
