10 Most Influential LGBT Characters In Video Games

6. Krem - Dragon Age: Inquisition

LGBT Video Game Characters
BioWare

Krem is easily the most minor character on this list, but he’s a GLAAD award winner and arguably the most groundbreaking, so is more than worthy of his place.

BioWare, despite usually being more inclusive than most developers, received some criticism for their depiction of transgender character Serendipity in Dragon Age II. Following this, they tried twice to rectify things.

Hainly Abrams in Mass Effect: Andromeda was well meaning but clumsy, with her offhandedly deadnaming herself in her first conversation with Ryder. Krem’s depiction in Dragon Age: Inquisition though, was inch perfect.

Though the word ‘transgender’ is never spoken (it would not make sense, given the era Dragon Age is set in), we are clearly told that Krem was born female but now lives his life as a man. A transgender focus group was brought in to ensure his dialogue was authentic, and this extra care really shines through.

Krem is forced to flee his homeland of Tevinter, not necessarily because he’s transgender but because he lied about his gender when he joined the army. Thankfully, Iron Bull protects him, losing an eye in the process, and Krem eventually becomes the Bull’s right hand man and chief lieutenant.
