Up until this point, the Call of Duty series had been well made - if ultimately forgettable - World War II shooters, but all that changed with the release of Call of Duty 4, which took the series into the present day. The single player campaign was a huge leap forward forward for console shooters, but the online multiplayer was a game changer.

It may be hard to imagine now, but until Call of Duty 4 arrived on the scene, besides Halo on Xbox, online shooters weren't associated with mass audiences on consoles. Superb gameplay, coupled with a great selection of maps and game modes would likely have assured the games sales success, but the cherry on top was the all-important perk system.

The idea of allowing players the chance to customise their characters weapon set, special abilities and appearance ensured players kept coming back for more.

It may have become increasingly popular to criticise the Call of Duty franchise of late, but that doesn’t negate the huge and ever-lasting influence that Modern Warfare has had on the gaming industry.

The current climate of video gaming from online tournaments to mega franchises such as Fortnite and Apex Legends is all owed to Call of Duty 4.
