10 Most Infuriatingly Awkward Video Game Levels Of All Time
3. The Turbo Tunnel - Battletoads
The era of SNES games where trial and error equalled longevity and 'value for money' is encapsulated wholeheartedly in Battletoads; otherwise known as one of the hardest games of all time.
Not hard in any particularly skill-testing way. More "Here are a bunch of obstacles that will wipe you out. Memorise all of their placements to proceed".
Such an approach was everywhere in the early 90s, though here, the amount of environmental hazards, jumps and easy-to-hit objects you need to navigate is nigh-on impossible until you've given it a good 30+ tries.
For many, this was the one level that broke them, especially seeing as the way Rare programmed the obstacles to 'fade in' nearly always makes you do a double-take as to which direction you should prioritise. Rumours abound as to a Battletoads remake, and it will be very interesting to see what a modern audience makes of this level of disregard for the player's time.
