One of the most beloved and iconic items in gaming history, the Fire Flower has become synonymous with Super Mario ever since its debut in the original title and, unlike other power ups, has rarely ever been excluded from games in the franchise since.

Found mainly in Question Mark blocks, Fire Flowers will most commonly appear only after players have grown after eating a Mushroom. Though, in the original two games, Fire Flowers will only make players grow from small to big Mario and not give them its fire abilities. In more recent games, Fire Flowers can be obtained at Toad Houses, making them far easier to find.

Fire Flowers will change Mario's outfit, usually to a white shirt and hat with red overalls, and will allow players to launch an infinite amount of fireballs out in front of them. These fireballs can bounce across the level and will take down most enemies, although there are some exceptions to this like Dry Bones.

The introduction of the Ice Flowers in some newer games brought with it a new level of power up strategy for players. Fire Flowers were still the fastest way to take down an enemy - however Ice Flowers could now do things that traditional Fire couldn't, such as kill Dry Bones and allow Mario to pick up and throw enemies easier.
