10 Most Overlooked PS4 Gems Of 2017 (So Far)
5. The Surge
If what FromSoftware did with Dark Souls' rise to prominence was birth a genre, then Deck13 are next in line as carrying on where Hidetaka Miyazaki's titles left off.
In fact, as the Souls mastermind once noted, taking all the franchise's various mechanics and general feel into space would be a supremely cool way to go - and it's here where Deck13 essentially say, "Hold my beer", because The Surge is quite literally 'Dark Souls in space". Though, like with Lords of the Fallen, The Surge also contains the supremely cool mechanic of not 'banking' your XP at a checkpoint, to gamble for a multiplier boost if you can stay alive and keep killing.
Not only that, but The Surge has a far more directly told story than any of Miyazaki's games, framing the narrative as "Utopian bio-augment company gone sour", seeing your initially wheelchair-bound protagonist fighting for his life after some impromptu surgery and an attack from a fellow patient.
From the get-go I think The Surge nails a sense of momentous survival-based drive that only comes after 'figuring out' the Souls (or Souls-like) games, and for that, it's highly recommended.
