10 Most Overused Video Game Plots

4. Zombie Apocalypse

I love zombies, I really do, my fascination with them starting with George A. Romero's series of classic flicks, and being nurtured from then on with the Resident Evil games. In the last decade or so especially, the zombie game appears to have been one genre that has flourished the most, if we just think of some titles off the top of our heads; Dead Rising, Left 4 Dead, Dead Island, and of course, how could we forget Resident Evil's old-school bunkmate, House of the Dead? Most bizarre is how the genre has even seeped into some unexpected areas; FPS Call of Duty now has a hugely popular (if totally nonsensical) zombie mode, even complete with a Romero cameo in one iteration, while Rockstar's classic third-person western adventure Red Dead Redemption has an Undead Nightmare expansion pack. Though it's a ripe genre for social commentary and a good excuse for gunning down waves of mindless enemies without too much of a consequence, again, it's a genre that's just been fully played out. The Resident Evil genre has been going downhill for the last two games and is now dire, House of the Dead hasn't been up to much in years, Dead Rising is fun for half an hour but ultimately insubstantial, Dead Island sucked (but was a huge success), and the Call of Duty mode has only cursory novelty value. It's time to remove the head, destroy the brain, and bury this genre for a while.
