10 Most Painful Video Game Cliffhangers EVER

6. Halo 2

Dead Space 3 Awakened Ending
Bungie

With a plot as deep and multifaceted as the Halo series, having a cliffhanger or two in there somewhere was always an inevitability. And if it gives everyone's favourite faceless hero, Master Chief, an excuse to do something else outlandishly macho, then that's okay in our books.

The ending of Halo 2 purposely leaves a lot of plot threads dangling. Firstly, there's Miranda, who, along with Johnson and Arbiter, are seemingly stranded on Delta Halo after the events of the game.

Then there's Master Chief himself, who stows away on a ship heading to Earth just as the Covenant are about to gain the upper hand in the fight. When asked over the radio what he's doing, he responds in suitably badass action hero fashion: "Sir...finishing this fight."

He might as well have said, "Sir...setting up the third Halo game."

Meanwhile, a post-credits scene shows Cortana held captive by the Gravemind, which further foreshadows the events of Halo 3.

Basically, everything is left up in the air, and you, the player, can only cringe at the prospect of being left without even one resolution. To make it worse, Halo 3 doesn't even explain how Miranda and co. return to Earth!
