The biggest battle royale game on the planet, if you are, or have a child in your life, Fortnite is likely completely inescapable for you.

Through a mix of clever marketing that ensures it's never out of the community conversation for very long, as well as just being a fun, solidly built game in its own right, Fortnite has dominated an entire generation of gamers. Like the rest of the free-to-play games that DON'T suck, the microtransactions that are there are purely cosmetic and don't change the dynamic of the game too harshly. There is stuff like being able to swing as Spider-Man, but frankly, in Fortnite, that's basically putting a giant bullseye on your butt and daring everyone to hit you through a megaphone, so it all evens out.

Fortnite's original spin on the battle royale formula, the structure building, works so well and adds to how hard the game is to put down. Players have to think on their feet, but also be patient and weigh their options. The constantly closing arena takes hunkering down and camping off the table, but putting up a few walls will keep you from getting sniped. This mitigates the unfair, out-of-nowhere deaths seen in games like PUBG.

The only thing keeping it under the other free-to-play game on this list is that Fortnite isn't nearly as subtle about its microtransactions as the next entry is.
