10 Most Terrifying Horror Video Games You've Never Played
1. Visage
There have been a couple of P.T. imitators on this list, but none quite come close to the quality of Visage. This indie title came out of nowhere with the confidence of a AAA studio working at the top of their game, producing a supremely terrifying first-person horror title that takes players on a descent into hell.
It takes a bit of time to get there though, as at first, all you have to explore is a mundane-looking house. Visage manages to make even that scary though; creeping down hallways with the power out, sensing a presence just outside of your peripheral vision, all the while feeling the breath of a monster on your neck. What's great about the scares in this game is that they're always unexpected: a fleeting image of something under a bed, a sudden crash coming from the attic, a pitch-black room that's only illuminated by a flash of your polaroid camera, a safe room that's, well, no longer safe. Despite how many times you'll backtrack through this house, you'll never feel at home.
And then comes the adventures outside of the house, into surreal dreamscapes with more overt horror imagery. While the puzzles might frustrate and the narrative doesn't quite come together, it hardly matters, because you'll be too scared to even notice.
