9. Perfect Vermin

Perfect Vermin is a game best played knowing nothing about it. So, here's your chance. It's free, it's on PC, it's 20 minutes long, and it's worth your time for the surprise factor alone.

If you aren't able to play it however, let me explain why Perfect Vermin is so special. When you first boot the game up, you might not even realise it's a horror title. You're just some guy, in a random, boring office building confronting a door. You walk up to the door, but instead of opening it, you're given a sledgehammer. So, you smash the door in, and are let loose to destroy all the objects you can find in the area. So far, so physics tech demo.

However, this mundane facade slips when you smash one object - be it a chair, a fridge or a table - and it splits apart into a mass of bloody flesh. Suddenly, you realise the aim of the game is to find these gross imitators that are hiding in plain sight. And all this occurs in just the first couple of minutes, before escalating into even weirder territory from there.

While the surprise of Perfect Vermin makes it noteworthy, it's the allegorical nature of the story that allows it to resonate like the best horror fiction. It has an absurd presentation, yes, but the story itself reflects real human fears and everyday personal horrors. Its thematics are as heavy as a sledgehammer, but worth delving into.
