10 Most Terrifying Monsters In Video Game History
3. Until Dawn - Wendingo
Until Dawn goes above and beyond in the pursuit of horror. A bevy of choices and a seriously impressive voice cast, it lives up to its billing as an interactive drama. Best of all, it boasts the wendingo, perhaps the most viscerally scary video game antagonist in recent memory.
Utilising the somewhat hoary trope of a Native American spell, the wendingos are a mutated strain of humanity turned into demented, bloodthirsty monsters after turning to cannibalism in the 1950s. With wolf-like senses and tenacity, they stalk their prey across the mountains that make up the game’s setting.
Making them even scarier, they maintain some of the form and even the characteristics of their human hosts - to be turned into a wendingo is a terrible curse, and one which can befall some of the playable characters if you make the wrong choices.
The wide selection of alternate endings means many players will take the game for another spin, but Until Dawn’s best creation is its antagonists. They may be based on American mythology, but as a video game baddie, they’re a fresh new terror.
