1. Pyramid Head (Silent Hill)

One of the most vague and mysterious enemies on this list, Pyramid Head is also the scariest video game character in history. Appearing first in Silent Hill 2, the warrior with the cheese grater-shaped head is a manifestation of protagonist James' fractured psychological state, and stalks him throughout the game, carrying a giant sword and always keeping the player on edge. What terrifies most is his unpredictability; he cannot be categorised as easily as most video game beasties, made wholly apparent once we glimpse him
raping another monster. Does it really get much more terrifying than that? So recognisable was his brand of threat that he was even incorporated into the Silent Hill films, though regrettably has figured less in the recent games. Konami succeeded in pushing the barrier with what video game villains could achieve, and also refused to explain away his existence as so many developers would feel pressured to do. He is the perfect manifestation of repression; dangerous, grotesque and strange.
