The precursor to the excellent Injustice: Gods Among Us, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe was Neatherealm's first foray into superhero fighting games. But, while virtually nobody wanted or needed to see DC heroes duke it out against the over-the-top characters of the bloody Mortal Kombat franchise, the title was actually a rather impressive hidden gem as far as crossover fighting games go.

Cutting out the fat and bringing together the most popular characters from both stables, it was worth picking up just to see how the move sets of both sides complimented and countered each other to create epic, multi-stage battles. And even though the game was toned down compared to other entries in the Mortal Kombat series, the violence was still as impactful as ever, resulting in some of the most brutal superhero combat the medium has ever seen.

The seeds of Mortal Kombat 2011's excellent story mode can be also found in this game, as the title boasts a rather inventive crossover narrative that manages to capture and blend the look and feel of both universes.

With Batman at the forefront, you can put Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe right up there with other classic crossover tales The Dark Knight has enjoyed over the years.
