10 Most Underrated Video Games Of 2017 (So Far)
10. The Surge
The Surge was the latest in the line of games taking inspiration from the Souls series and didn't quite hit the heights that it was hoping. The game itself was quite different from Dark Souls with the similarities being minor at best, but that didn't stop the comparison being made, which ultimately hit the game hard.
The game was simply held to too high a standard. However, unlike Nioh (which managed to survive the comparison and come out better) The Surge buckled and people started to point out holes with general movement and combat animation, proclaiming, "Dark Souls did it better".
However, the game itself isn't bad. In fact, it's quite good if the stigma of 'Dark Souls clone' wasn't attached. Combat has its own unique flair thanks to being predicated on limb-targeting to retrieve specific equipment - something that in itself is very engaging. And there's a more easily delivered story to boot - something you'd have to scour item descriptions to find in the Souls series. The twists in gameplay and customisation are welcome, and the bosses are for the most part, very interesting.
Just go into it not expecting the next Dark Souls, and you're in for a good time.
