4. Abe
Is there a more scared and frail looking hero than Abe? Definitely struggling to think of one. Star of PSOne classics Abe's Odyssey and Abe's Exodus, he is a simple slave working at Rupture Farms but after witnessing one injustice too many, decides that he needs to free himself and his fellow Mudokons. Abe manages to do all of this without getting into a single fight, instead using his powers of telepathy to hypnotise his enemies into opening doors for him and even killing themselves, often in highly amusing ways. He is also the only character on this list who can fart on command. That more than anything perhaps marks him out as the most unlikely gaming hero of all time.
