10 Most Value For Money RPGs In Gaming
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Ah, Skyrim. Very few games could have gone now more than a decade without spawning a sequel and remain relevant, but herein lies the sheer staying power of Bethesda’s fifth Elder Scrolls game. A sequel in itself to 2006’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and the series’ prior entries, the game has since become so well known that it is known almost exclusively without the addition of its parent series in the title.
Skyrim truly represents the culmination of its developer’s expertise in the RPG genre, formed over years of working on both The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. Casting the player as the Dragonborn, who discovers their destiny to defeat Aldiun, a great dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world of Tamriel, the main quest follows the story right through to its completion.
However, the beauty of the game is that it is entirely feasible to ignore this entirely. The locations of Skyrim are populated with such a wealth of characters, side quests, guilds, and activities that you can quite easily spend many, many hours across many playthroughs fobbing off your Dragonborn duties and leading whatever life takes your fancy. Add to this the three further DLC and vibrant modding community, you can both bring the game’s graphics up to date and add hours of extra content provided by fellow fans entirely for free.
For most games, the persistent re-releases of the game with a fresh price tag every few years would be difficult to negate, but thankfully for Skyrim, it seemingly always will.
