10 Movies Based On Video Games That Misinterpreted Their Source

1. Alone In The Dark

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-Gc5bgZ2B8 Alone in the Dark may not have been that great of a game, but it is widely considered as the father of all survival horror games. Games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill may have better gameplay and plots, but to be honest they probably wouldn't exist without Alone in the Dark. Over the 20 years since its first release, it has earned its placed on many lists as one of the most influential games of all time. The game has spawned 3 sequels to it and has received many awards both for its story and legacy, so it makes sense that a movie would be made for the game. What doesn't make sense though is why any person on earth let Uwe Boll near it. After he showed what he was capable of with House of the Dead as well as showing the world he was happy to waste German government's money, it comes as surprise that the creators of Alone in the Dark let him near them game. Being Uwe Boll, you know that the movie is going to be bad but I didn't expect it to be so different to the game. You see, Boll doesn't just change the story of the game, he throws the script out of the window and decides to go with his own script. In the game, we are told that the monsters can only attack us in the dark, in fact the title of the game gives away that anything that's going to happen will happen in the dark. Boll doesn't understand this, of course, and has the main protagonist in the film attacked by monsters in broad daylight. The thing is, this isn't enough for Boll, if he's going to bugger up he needs to do a lot more to get the attention he needs. The monsters in the game, and there were quite a few of them, weren't enough for Boll as he decided to add in a few creations of his own. The game didn't even make it that difficult, you get attacked by run of the mill zombies and ghosts that were the industry standard and have remain so. In the film however the characters are faced with badly generated flying snakes, weird creatures that seem to be a breed between dog and horse and animals covered in some sort of armour. To be honest, I don't even know what some of the monsters in the film were or how Boll even came up with them. That's all I can say about Alone in the Dark really, I never even finished the film as it was just that terrible and completely different to the game. According to some of the reviews posted online about it, the ending was exactly the same as the game's but does that really matter? When you've butchered the game to the extent that it's unrecognisable as a film who cares that the main character leaves through the front door just as he did with the game? I know I'm harping on about Uwe Boll, but someone needs to stop him making movie adaptations of popular and much loved video games. He's ensured that every time someone spends a moment thinking about their favourite childhood video game, they'll wince for a few seconds as they recall the mockery that Uwe Boll made of those fond memories by transporting them to film and stamping all over them. Dear God: if Uwe Boll ever made a film about the game Journey I'm quite sure the universe would implode as two unstoppable forces of video game carnage met. Like this article?
