10 Mundane But Incredibly Useful Items In Dungeons And Dragons
1. Healer's Kit
There are times in Dungeons and Dragons when you don’t want to take any chances. Your backs against the wall, the party is dropping like flies and the wizard is out of spell slots. If only we could revive the Cleric. Then you should have brought a healer’s kit in the last town.
This little bag containing salves, bandages and splints can be brought for just 5GP, with it you can stabilise a creature up to ten times, saving them from death, without having to make a Wisdom medicine check.
Now yes, there are many ways to stabilise a creature in this game, from spells and healing potions to a simple DC 10 Wisdom Medicine skill check, but not everyone has access to these. Healing spells may only be part of one character’s repertoire and potions can be expensive. As for the skill check, do you really want that fighter, the one with a -1 in Wisdom making that check? Especially when your character's life is in the balance?
There is no reason that all the members of your party aren’t carrying one of these at all times, it’s something cheap and simple that could save you all from a total party kill. But these kits can get even better.
If on level you were to forgo raising your abilities and take a feat, you could choose the healer's feat. This has two uses. First of all, when you use a healer’s kit to stabilize a creature, they now get up with one hit point. Secondly, you can now use a charge of the healer’s kit to help the creature regain 1D6 + 4 hit points, equal to the creature’s maximum number of hit dice. Sure, this creature then has to take a short or long rest for this to be used again, but this is an incredibly useful ability.
