10 MUST-PLAY Video Game Spin-Offs
1. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Finally, we have the newest game on our list; a unique experiment that proved to be one of the best spin-offs in recent years. Nintendo's portly plumber had already been in countless side-shows in his three-decade-long history, from sports games to the wildly popular Super Smash Bros franchise. Most of these efforts had been developed in-house at Nintendo, but that changed at E3 2017. Ubisoft surprised many when series creator Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage to announce Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, which would be handled by Ubisoft Milan.
Miyamoto was initially impressed by a Mario strategy game prototype back in 2014 and allowed the French publisher to use his most well-known character. Pairing up Nintendo's most popular icon with XCOM style strategy proved surprisingly addictive, as Ubisoft Milan leveraged the strengths of that title to create a Mario experience unlike any other. Utilising characters from both franchises and their unique abilities to create a more tactical experience, the game was also vibrant and colourful, creating a seamless blend of both worlds. Ubisoft's gamble paid off, as Kingdom Battle remains the best selling Switch title that wasn't developed by Nintendo.
