9. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
Following the wild success of Far Cry 3 in 2012, Ubisoft Montreal started looking into ways to expand on it. They eventually settled on a futuristic sci-fi shooter that took 3's mechanics and loosened up on the realism. The result was Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, a dazzling and enjoyable slice of entertainment compressed down into a cheaper standalone release. The game really stuck out on arrival due to its retro-futuristic aesthetic, while also offering a straightforward progression system. It remains the fastest selling downloadable title in Ubisoft's history.
Firmly embracing its '80s inspirations, Blood Dragon remains one of the most zany and vibrant standalone stories in the series. It may not have been the first spin-off for the FPS franchise, but it was arguably the first to really make a mark. It was chock full of classy references, wacky humour and above all else, offered an insanely fun alternative to its original source material. Casting Michael Biehn to play Sergeant Rex "Power" Colt was a brilliant move and anyone who grew up in that colourful decade is sure to pick up on the countless elements woven into Blood Dragon's fabric.
