10 Nasty Video Game Levels Designed To Torture You

8. Metropolis Zone - Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Underwater mission
Sega

Not for one second, should you believe Sega had anything but malicious intent when it made Metropolis Zone.

Not even an inch of leeway is afforded to Sonic as he traverses the underbelly of Robotnik's city, every step forward is another one closer to death, either by environmental hazards or cutesy animals turned machines of death, i.e. Badniks.

Most of the blame goes to Asterons, robotic starfish that, harmless when avoided, will explode in a hail of barbs when they're in close proximity to the Hog. Combined with small spaces and scripted vertical climbs with corkscrews, surviving a hit comes down to whether you have a surplus rings, not perfect platforming skills.

There are three acts of this hell to endure, as opposed to the usual two, too, and to top it all off, the end-of-level encounter with Robotnik isn't a surefire win. You could die and be left screaming bloody murder as Game Over rolls across the screen.

Hey, at least the music is terrific.
