10 Needless Video Game Features We Could All Do Without

8. 3D Platforming

Platforming has been a part of video games since the very beginning, most notably as a core mechanic in early iconic gaming series such as the Super Mario series, Mega Man and of course Sega's Sonic The Hedgehog franchise. However, ever since gaming advanced from the bit era into the technology of 3D graphics, platforming has been left in an awkward position as a mechanic. While platformers made up a large percent of the game library for consoles like the Super Nintendo and the Sega Master System, they've steadily declined in popularity compared to other genres since the advent of 3D gaming. It's gotten to the point where 3D platformers without a history or a big name behind them are seldom released, the market mainly being handled by Nintendo and Sega titles. The problem is, there's just very little need for 3D platformers, they no longer scratch an itch that other genres do. It doesn't mean the genre has to die completely, recent indie 2D platformers like Shovel Knight have been incredibly well received, that's likely where platform games are better off, we simply don't need 3D platforming as a mechanic anymore.
