10 Nintendo Games To Keep You Happy Until The Next Metroid
Scratching that Metroidvania itch in the most satisfying way possible.
The Metroid franchise is bloody great. Seriously, look at almost any list documenting the best games of all time, and you’ll see at least two or three Metroid games (usually chilling out in the top half of the list). The exploration heavy gameplay and item based progression has influenced hoards of video games over the years, to the extent that this unique genre has been christened “metroidvania” by gamers around the world. Hey, everybody loves Metroid.
So it’s no surprise that the recent E3 announcement of Metroid: Federation Force was met with all the enthusiasm as a fart in a submarine. For those who aren't aware, after waiting half a decade for news of a new Metroid on either 3DS or Wii U, we were shown a multiplayer shooter that ignores absolutely everything that fans love about the series in the first place.
Unsurprisingly, Nintendo picked up on the fan outrage and hastily promised that we’d see a new 'core' Metroid title on their next home console.
However, considering how the Nintendo NX is still at least a couple of years away, Metroid lovers have a long wait ahead of them before they can join up with Samus Aran again. Fortunately, we’ve put together a list of some great Nintendo games that are guaranteed to scratch that Metroid itch.
10. Batman: Arkham City - Armoured Edition
The Batman: Arkham series has set the bar incredibly high not only for superhero games, but action adventure games full stop. Fantastic voice acting, tight combat, and varied gameplay has ensured that other comic book tie in games will be copying this series for a long time (*cough*, Amazing Spider Man 2).
Anyway, there are undoubtedly shades of Metroid throughout the series. The item based progression, exploration, and world packed with secrets, collectables and upgrades means that any game in the Arkham trilogy will more than sate the appetite of anyone looking to get their fix of Metroid. Although to be honest, you really should have played at least one of these games already.
Luckily these days, you can pick up the Wii U exclusive version Arkham City for very cheap. It's basically a Game of the Year edition with some neat Gamepad features thrown in.
