4. APF Imagination Machine

The oldest console on this list, the APF Imagination Machine hit the market in late 1979 to compete with the Atari 2600 VCS, which had taken the market by storm when it was released two years prior. The Imagination Machine was very notable for being one of the first consoles that could be expanded to turn it into a fully fledged home computer, but this also made it very expensive to buy. The APF M1000 console itself could be connected to IM-1 computer module and then connected to a host of other devices such as disk drives, printers and even a modem. Specs-wise the APF was pretty comparable to its competitors with high and low resolution modes in up to eight colours with one channel sound. But, it was seriously lacking in the games department with only 15 cartridges ever released, including exciting titles such as Budget Manager, Shoot and Doodle. An upgraded version of the console was planned, but APF sadly went out of business before it was released.
