5. Broken Sword - The Infamous Goat
As point-and-click games go, Broken Sword's puzzles are surprisingly sensical. Yet just when you get to the point in the game where you think you've understood its formula, it throws you off with this monstrosity. As the hero George Stobbart tries to enter a desolate castle in Ireland, his path is blocked by a particularly bellicose goat that's ready to ram him to the ground if he tries to get past. Until this point in the game, Broken Sword doesn't feature any puzzles that require lightning-quick reflexes - just an astute mind and a lot of patience. This all changes when you encounter the goat, as you have to let it ram you, then quickly jump up and use a broken cart to entangle its rope next time it lunges for you. It sounds relatively simple, but the fact that this puzzle was so at odds with the rest of the game made it completely abstruse, and helped it go down in legend as one of the most difficult video game puzzles ever. The puzzle is now widely referred to as 'The Infamous Goat'.
