10 Obscure Video Game Secrets That Took Years To Discover

1. Hidden Message - Gumball

Resident Evil 4
Robert A. Cook

By far the most hidden and well-kept secret in a video game to date. So much so, that you probably don't remember the game or the system it ran on. Gumball for the Apple II had a hidden message buried in its files that took an intrepid code-breaker thirty-three years to discover.

It wasn't the most complex of messages but was made even better by the length of time it took to discover it within a really basic game. After thirty-three years, the developer himself even reached out to the man behind the discovery to congratulate him on finding the longest-hidden secret in a single video game.

It really speaks to the fact that we may think we know everything about video-games, but there are countless hidden touches that remain to be found. Perhaps in twenty years, someone will look as Call of Duty and find the equivalent of the Da Vinci Code hidden in it's software.
