10 Obvious Video Game Home Runs That Somehow FAILED
1. Cyberpunk 2077
Living up to expectations is never easy. CD Projekt RED had a figurative Himalayas to climb following up The Witcher 3 with something as grand and ambitious in scope and folded under pressure as a result. Accounting for the disastrous post-launch, it's easy to forget how much hype followed Cyberpunk 2077's pre-release. The dystopian action RPG was hailed as the second coming in gaming before it even went to print — an accolade that, based on its handling of Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher books, was understandable, if hasty. If nothing else, such assuredness only spoke to the quality of Geralt's video game adventures.
The science fiction romp eventually manifested in 2020 and only a travesty followed. Initially downplaying accusations of cut content, game-breaking bugs, and poor performance on last-gen hardware, CDPR ultimately found itself forced to confront Cyberpunk's problems head-on. Sony pulled V's troubled story from its digital stores, class-action lawsuits were filed and apologies were written. Years would pass until the stigma of its initial release would soften and only with the release of expansion Phantom Liberty, would many fans offer forgiveness for the sins of the past.
