10 Obvious Video Game Home Runs That Somehow FAILED
4. Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite
Here we have a case study of why pandering to a highly specific audience is always a bad idea.
Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite, just like its forebears, was supposed to be a celebration of the characters belonging to both studios in balls-to-the-wall fan service like no other. What it ended up being was a thinly veiled attempt to capitalize on the success of the MCU by omitting a huge number of popular Marvel mainstays that had yet to appear in Disney-owned live-action. There's a reason, after all, that Captain Marvel and Iron Man found themselves the poster child for this entry in the series.
Frustratingly, the nuts and bolts of Infinite were mechanically sound and arguably superior to MvC3, though that came at the expense of no fan-favourite X-Men appearing on the roster. The AWOL status of Charles Xavier's gifted children, combined with character models and animations straight out of Uncanny Valley territory, led to Infinite earning the unwanted status of a red-headed stepchild.
Unsurprisingly, there's been no talk of sequels since and, judging by Infinite's poor sales, Capcom's going to think twice before revisiting what was once one of the best crossovers in gaming. Sad times.
