There are only a handful of games that have been as influential as Counter-Strike, not just for the first-person shooter genre, but for games as a whole. Originally developed as a mod for Half-Life, Counter-Strike quickly grew to being one of Valve’s most successful franchises worldwide.

Though the original mod for Half-Life was released to the public in 1999, the more well-known iteration of the original classic — Counter-Strike 1.6 — would only find its way to players by 2003. The gameplay is still as fast-paced, the multiplayer is just as competitive and getting that perfectly lined up headshot is just as satisfying.

Steam Charts reports CS 1.6 handles over 20,000 active players per day. While that might not sound like much compared to the player base over on Global Offensive, it’s still four times larger than Counter-Strike: Source’s active community.
