Treyarch’s gritty and unapologetic depiction of the second world war, Call of Duty: World at War, was certainly one of the more beloved titles in the series. As the first game in the Black Ops story line, World at War featured more mature themes than previous games in the series, and gave the player more options for retaliation during gunfights, inspiring comforting yet surprising gameplay.

World at War’s multiplayer featured plentiful, but not overwhelming class customization, and its gameplay put a unique spin on the already fantastic formula from Call of Duty 4. The maps were also varied in their size, layout and visual aesthetic, ensuring there was something pleasing for everyone.

The game also included a zombies mode, which later grew to become a staple for later games in the Call of Duty franchise. With over 2000 active players per day, finding a game is a relative non-issue, and the enthusiasm the community has for the title is definitely underscored by the fact that even some newer games in the series are far less played online.
